Speaking during an Oval Office announcement for a planned $15 billion Iowa steel plant, Trump blamed Democrats for economic difficulties and insisted he remains more popular than during the 2024 election. Republicans, however, are pouring money and campaign resources into Iowa as traditionally safe races have become unexpectedly competitive.
Farmers face problems that predate Trump, including consolidation, high borrowing costs and volatile commodity markets. But his tariffs have increased prices for equipment and agricultural inputs, while the U.S.-Iran conflict has disrupted energy markets and driven diesel prices to record levels. Nationwide diesel recently reached roughly $6.50 per gallon, with agriculture and trucking among the industries feeling the greatest impact.
One Iowa farmer described farmers and trucking companies as “bleeding money,” reflecting broader concerns across the state’s agricultural sector.
The political challenge is particularly notable because Iowa’s rural communities strongly supported Trump in 2024. Republican candidates are now confronting the possibility that economic frustration may reduce turnout among voters who helped return him to the White House.
