MOUNT POCONO, Pennsylvania — President Donald Trump publicly confirmed at a Pennsylvania rally Tuesday that he used the phrase “shithole countries” in a 2018 Oval Office meeting to refer to Haiti and several African nations, a remark he had long denied. Trump recounted the moment after a rally attendee shouted the phrase while he was promoting his newly announced pause on migration from countries including Afghanistan, Haiti, and Somalia.

Trump went on to describe Somalia as “filthy, dirty, disgusting, ridden with crime,” echoing sentiments that drew global condemnation when first reported in 2018. At the time, foreign governments issued formal objections, congressional Republicans expressed concern, and Trump publicly insisted he had not used the language. The latest acknowledgment revives the earlier controversy and underscores his increasingly confrontational public rhetoric, which now routinely includes profanity during televised remarks.

Foreign backlash again resurfaced following Tuesday’s rally, with past critics recalling statements from leaders such as Botswana’s government—which summoned the U.S. ambassador in 2018—and Senegal’s President Macky Sall, who said African nations “merit the respect and consideration of all.” Trump’s comments come amid a renewed focus on immigration, including plans to halt migration from multiple “Third World” countries.
