HOUSTON, Texas — Republican state Rep. Steve Toth defeated U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw in Tuesday’s primary, unseating one of the few Texas House Republicans who did not receive President Donald Trump’s endorsement heading into the nation’s first major primary contest of 2026.
Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL seeking a fifth term in Texas’ 2nd Congressional District, faced criticism from the party’s hard-right wing over his occasional breaks with Trump and GOP leadership. Crenshaw had publicly acknowledged President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory, putting him at odds with some Republicans. He also drew backlash after a video circulated in which he criticized certain GOP figures as “grifters” and “performance artists.”
Toth, a member of the Texas Legislature’s conservative caucus, secured a late endorsement from Sen. Ted Cruz, boosting his campaign in the final stretch. After the victory, Toth described the race as “a referendum on representatives who campaign one way and govern another.”
Crenshaw, who lost his right eye during military service in Afghanistan, had built a national profile but increasingly faced challenges from the party’s right flank.
