DeKalb County, Georgia — Newly released federal court documents detail how three men accused of violent crimes escaped from a Georgia jail and hijacked a Lyft rideshare during a brazen, multi-state attempt to flee to south Florida. Authorities say Stevenson Charles, 24, Yusuf Minor, 31, and Naod Yohannes, 25, escaped from the DeKalb County jail on Sunday and remained at large for three days before being captured in Florida.
According to an FBI affidavit, the men used a fake female name to request a Lyft ride, allegedly with help from Minor’s girlfriend. When the driver attempted to end the trip, the men attacked her, wrapped a rope around her neck, and forced her into the backseat. Investigators say the driver was held captive during a roughly 10-hour drive to Florida and was threatened with rape and murder.
Once in Florida, the suspects allegedly used the victim’s credit cards and bank information to rent a property in Miramar, near Miami, and continued using her vehicle. Law enforcement tracked the suspects through license plate readers and rescued the driver during the arrest. She was later examined for injuries.
Officials said the escape was discovered during a routine jail security check and involved an older, compromised section of the facility. Two of the men are serving life sentences for murder, while the third faces murder and armed robbery charges. Authorities are reviewing jail infrastructure and outside assistance that may have aided the escape.
