TEXAS — Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) introduced Articles of Impeachment Tuesday against U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, accusing the Obama-appointed jurist of “abuse of power” for approving secret subpoenas during the Arctic Frost investigation. The subpoenas sought phone metadata from 11 Republican lawmakers under nondisclosure orders that prevented carriers from notifying them.
Gill alleged Boasberg “weaponized the judiciary against critics of the Biden administration” by authorizing the subpoenas, which reportedly targeted call records rather than content. Verizon complied with the orders, while AT&T pushed back. The Arctic Frost probe, overseen by Special Counsel Jack Smith, was aimed at communications linked to classified documents and other federal investigations.
Gill’s impeachment resolution has 11 Republican cosponsors, including Reps. Eli Crane (R-AZ) and Byron Donalds (R-FL). Both backed Gill’s action on X, calling Boasberg a “radical activist judge.”
Boasberg previously blocked one of former President Donald Trump’s deportation orders earlier this year and has ruled in several high-profile cases later reviewed by the Supreme Court. The House Judiciary Committee will first review the articles; impeachment requires a majority in the House and a two-thirds Senate vote for conviction.
