Keller, Texas. The mayor of Keller, a suburb in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, has issued a proclamation rejecting Islamic Sharia law, despite the fact that Sharia law has no legal standing in Texas or anywhere else in the United States. Mayor Armin Mizani signed a declaration stating that only the U.S. and Texas constitutions govern civil and judicial matters within the city.

In a social media post, Mizani said Keller would “never” be governed by foreign legal systems such as Sharia law and framed the move as a defense of constitutional supremacy. The proclamation asserts that no religious or foreign legal system may operate as civil authority in the city while simultaneously affirming First Amendment protections for freedom of religion and worship.

Legal experts and civil rights groups have long noted that Sharia law does not exist within U.S. courts and cannot supersede federal, state, or local law. Courts across the country operate exclusively under secular constitutional frameworks, and religious principles—whether Islamic, Christian, or Jewish—have no independent legal authority. Critics argue that such proclamations address a non-existent threat while fueling public misunderstanding and targeting Muslim communities.

Mizani said the proclamation is a first step and that he plans to work with city council members to codify the language. He is also running for Texas House District 98, a heavily Republican seat opening next year.

The move aligns with broader efforts by Texas Republican officials to spotlight Sharia law as a political issue. State and federal lawmakers have recently introduced legislation and caucuses aimed at combating what they describe as the spread of Sharia law, claims that remain unsupported by evidence of its presence in U.S. governance.
