Lovelady, Texas — A Texas man serving a 40-year prison sentence for the gruesome killing of his new wife was found dead in his cell this week, with authorities saying his death appeared to be self-inflicted.
Jared James Dicus, who pleaded guilty in 2024 to murdering and decapitating his wife, Anggy Diaz, was discovered hanging inside his cell at the Wainwright Unit in Lovelady, according to a state death report cited by local media. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but Dicus was pronounced dead around 11 p.m. His death remains under review, consistent with standard procedures for inmate fatalities.
The killing that led to Dicus’ conviction occurred on January 11, 2023, just four months after the couple married. Authorities were called to a small cabin behind Dicus’ parents’ home near Magnolia, northwest of Houston, after his parents reported a death on their property. When deputies arrived, they found Diaz’s headless body inside the cabin amid extensive blood evidence.
Court records later showed Diaz suffered multiple stab wounds to the back. Investigators said her severed head was located in a shower, along with the kitchen knife believed to have been used in the attack. Montgomery County Sheriff Troy Guidry described the scene at the time as “gruesome.”
Dicus later entered a plea agreement that spared him a potential life sentence, making him eligible for parole in 2043. Officials have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding his death, and prison authorities have not indicated whether any outside factors were involved.
