A weekend fire that destroyed the South Carolina home of Circuit Court Judge Diane Goodstein and her husband, former Democratic state senator Arnold Goodstein, is not believed to be arson, according to state investigators. Mark Keel, chief of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, said Monday that “no evidence indicates the fire was intentionally set,” though the investigation remains ongoing.
The blaze, which erupted Saturday in Edisto, prompted intense online speculation fueled by partisan rhetoric. Judge Goodstein was overseeing a case involving access to state voting records sought by the Trump administration, increasing scrutiny from both political sides.
Democratic Rep. Daniel Goldman accused Trump supporters of “doxxing and threatening judges who rule against Trump,” while California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s staff member alleged that Goodstein was “publicly targeted” by DOJ official Harmeet Dhillon.
The South Carolina Supreme Court has since overturned Goodstein’s ruling blocking the voter records request. The fire’s cause remains undetermined.
