Clinton, Louisiana — Six people, including a child, were shot Saturday during a carnival parade in rural Louisiana, prompting authorities to take one person into custody and shut down the event, according to local and state officials.
The shooting occurred near the East Feliciana Parish courthouse during Clinton’s “Mardi Gras in the Country” parade, a small-town celebration that draws residents from the surrounding area. Local outlet WBRZ reported that gunfire erupted during the festivities, leading law enforcement to immediately cancel the parade and secure the area. Officials confirmed that at least one suspect has been detained and that investigators are searching for a vehicle believed to be connected to the shooting.
The East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Louisiana State Police later took over the investigation, with troopers blocking nearby streets and assisting local deputies at the scene. Authorities have not released details on the condition of the victims or a possible motive.
Clinton, a town of roughly 1,300 residents located northeast of Baton Rouge, has rarely seen large-scale violence, making the incident particularly jarring for the community. The shooting added to a growing number of mass shooting incidents reported nationwide so far this year.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people are wounded or killed, there have been at least 24 such incidents across the United States in 2026. The database is frequently cited by researchers and policymakers tracking trends in gun-related violence.
