Phoenix, Arizona — Newly filed federal election records show that a man identified in court filings as having had an affair with former Sen. Kyrsten Sinema received nearly $9,000 from her former campaign committee in October, weeks after his estranged wife accused Sinema of interfering in their marriage.

According to reporting from The Guardian and financial disclosures reviewed by Notus, the recipient was Matthew J. Ammel, a former Army servicemember who later worked as a security guard for Sinema. Federal Election Commission filings show Ammel was paid $1,815.91 on October 15 and $7,136.14 on October 31, with the expenses listed as payroll under Sinema for Arizona.

Records further indicate that between July 2024 and October 2025, Ammel received more than $128,000 from Sinema’s political committees, including a separate PAC tied to the former senator. The filings also confirm that Sinema has formally shut down her campaign committee, which spent hundreds of thousands of dollars after she left office in January 2025.

Those post-campaign expenditures included health services for security staff, airfare, lodging, meals, and entertainment. Additional spending occurred during travel to destinations such as Saudi Arabia, Las Vegas, and Napa Valley.

In a lawsuit filed in North Carolina, Ammel’s wife, Heather Ammel, alleges Sinema knowingly pursued a relationship with her husband, provided gifts and concert tickets, and encouraged drug use. Sinema has not publicly commented on the allegations.
