CHICAGO, Illinois — Federal and local authorities are searching for a man accused of firing at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents during an immigration enforcement operation in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood Saturday. Officials said the agents were conducting law enforcement activities under “Operation Midway Blitz” when a suspect in a black Jeep opened fire before fleeing the scene.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) called the incident part of a “dangerous trend” of escalating violence toward federal law enforcement, noting a rise in assaults and obstruction in recent months. No one was reported hit by gunfire.
The confrontation occurred near 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue after agents detained a young woman, drawing protesters who demanded her release. CBS News reported that some demonstrators threw bricks and a paint can at CBP vehicles. One Chicago police officer was struck by a car while responding and hospitalized.
Witnesses told WLS-TV that agents used tear gas and pointed weapons at protesters. CBP continued enforcement actions nearby, detaining at least one more person as activists sounded car horns and whistles to alert others. Federal investigators are continuing to search for the shooter.
