Austin, Texas. Vince Shlomi, best known for pitching the “ShamWow” towel in late-night infomercials, is seeking a seat in Congress as a Republican candidate in Texas. According to a filing on the Texas GOP’s website, Shlomi is running in the district represented by Rep. John Carter, an 84-year-old incumbent who has served more than 20 years in the U.S. House and recently confirmed he will run for another term.
Shlomi told Fox News that his decision to run is driven by concerns over political division nationally and a desire to “destroy wokeism” in Congress. He said he hopes to “make America happy” and offer an alternative to what he views as unproductive partisan conflict.
His public profile comes with past controversy. In 2009, Shlomi was arrested for aggravated battery following a fight with a woman who was also arrested. Prosecutors ultimately declined to pursue charges. In a 2013 interview with NBC News, he acknowledged the incident, saying he took “full responsibility” and had since scaled back his partying.
Though Shlomi has filed with the state party, he has not yet filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission. Texas’ candidate filing deadline is in December, with the primary scheduled for March.
Carter faces multiple primary challengers this cycle. One, businessman Raymond Hamden, recently outraised the incumbent after lending his campaign $105,500, signaling a potentially competitive GOP primary field.
