San Antonio, Texas – San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is calling for Ye’s July 4 concert at the Alamodome to be canceled, citing the artist’s history of antisemitic remarks and the use of a city-owned venue.
“I support canceling the Ye concert,” Jones wrote on social media. “Military City USA should not host someone with a record of hate speech and antisemitic comments in a city-funded facility like our Alamodome—not ever, and certainly not on July 4th, our Nation’s 250th birthday.”
Local opposition has grown, with Bexar County officials and Jewish community leaders also criticizing the planned show. The San Antonio Express-News reported that the concert is still scheduled and has sold tens of thousands of tickets.
City officials have acknowledged legal limits. News 4 San Antonio reported that leaders said canceling the concert could raise First Amendment concerns, depending on the city’s contract and the reason for cancellation.
Ye, formerly Kanye West, has faced widespread backlash for antisemitic statements, praise of Adolf Hitler, and merchandise using Nazi imagery. His planned concerts have also drawn opposition or cancellations in Europe and the United Kingdom.
