Tallahassee, Florida — With the 2025 political calendar winding down, attention is already shifting toward the 2028 Republican presidential primary, and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is increasingly signaling that he may not be finished on the national stage.

DeSantis, who unsuccessfully challenged President Donald Trump for the GOP nomination in 2024, is term-limited as governor but has remained active on high-profile issues that resonate with Republican primary voters. Among them is a potential mid-decade redistricting effort in Florida that could add several GOP-leaning House seats, depending on the outcome of a pending Supreme Court case involving racial gerrymandering. DeSantis already reshaped Florida’s congressional map in 2022, boosting Republicans’ advantage in the delegation.

The governor has also staked out an independent position on emerging policy fronts, including proposing a state-level “AI bill of rights” ahead of Trump’s move to federalize artificial intelligence regulation. Additionally, DeSantis recently designated the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist organizations, echoing similar actions by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and reinforcing his hardline posture on national security.

Political analysts say DeSantis is clearly looking ahead. University of Central Florida professor Aubrey Jewett noted that proposals such as eliminating property taxes through a constitutional amendment could give DeSantis powerful credentials with the GOP’s low-tax base. Still, others argue the flaws that hurt his 2024 campaign — particularly concerns about charisma — remain unresolved.

Polling suggests DeSantis trails Vice President JD Vance for early 2028 support, but with years left before the first votes are cast, Florida’s governor appears determined to keep himself firmly in the conversation.
