WASHINGTON — Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.) warned Friday that Republicans could face major electoral losses in 2026 if they fail to address rising health care costs, calling the issue both a moral and political necessity. “We need to deal with health care now because it’s the right thing to do — and we’re going to get killed [in 2026] if we don’t,” Van Drew said during an interview on Fox Business’s Wall Street with Maria Bartiromo.

Van Drew’s comments come amid a record-breaking government shutdown and growing public concern over health care affordability. Open enrollment for Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans began this month, with premiums set to rise by an average of 26% next year as enhanced subsidies near expiration. A recent AP-NORC poll found that nearly 60% of Americans are deeply worried about the cost of care.

Echoing President Donald Trump, Van Drew urged Senate Republicans to “forget about the filibuster” and move to reopen the government so the party can craft a replacement for the ACA. His warning followed Democratic victories in New Jersey, Virginia, and New York, where candidates focused heavily on affordability and economic stability — issues Van Drew said Republicans must prioritize to remain competitive.
