Washington, D.C. — Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Wednesday he fears President Trump may take extreme actions to divert attention from newly released Epstein Files, telling the Associated Press he believes the upcoming disclosures could be “devastating” for the president. Pritzker speculated Trump might even escalate foreign policy crises, saying, “He might take us to war with Venezuela just to get a distraction in the news.”
Pritzker, seen as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender, also criticized members of his own party over their votes to end the government shutdown. Seven Democratic senators and one independent sided with Republicans, a move Pritzker called an “enormous mistake” that he said helped the Trump administration. “We were winning,” he said, pointing to Democratic gains in recent elections. “I do not understand why people caved.”
His comments came as newly released documents continued raising questions about Trump’s past interactions with Jeffrey Epstein. One 2019 email from Epstein claimed Trump “knew about the girls,” though the context remains unclear. The White House said Democrats were selectively leaking documents to smear the president.
Pritzker has been a vocal opponent of Trump’s immigration policies, particularly the large-scale federal raids in Chicago under “Operation Midway Blitz,” which have resulted in more than 3,300 arrests since September. He warned the effort may soon expand to other states and said he has been in contact with North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein about potential deployments in Charlotte.
