Chicago, Illinois — Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s military action in Venezuela, calling the operation unconstitutional and warning that it places U.S. troops at risk without congressional authorization or a clearly defined long-term strategy.

Trump praised U.S. forces after announcing that American personnel captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife during a late-night operation in Caracas. Speaking at a White House press conference, Trump said the United States would temporarily “run” Venezuela during a transition period and asserted that the operation was justified because Maduro and his wife face federal narco-terrorism indictments in New York. He also invoked the Monroe Doctrine and said the Western Hemisphere was safer following the action.

Pritzker pushed back, arguing that the president should focus on domestic economic issues rather than launching overseas military operations. Illinois Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Chicago) echoed that criticism, calling the move a violation of both U.S. and international law and noting Trump’s repeated campaign promises to avoid new wars.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also opposed the action, linking it to broader rhetoric about Venezuelan migrants and warning that dehumanizing language can lay the groundwork for military escalation. Trump, meanwhile, defended the operation by citing alleged drug trafficking and said major U.S. oil companies would invest heavily in Venezuela’s energy infrastructure, claiming the arrangement would ultimately cost the United States nothing.
