A coalition of medical groups and a pregnant physician are suing Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over a change in U.S. COVID-19 vaccine guidance. The lawsuit, filed in Massachusetts, argues Kennedy unlawfully removed COVID-19 vaccines from the recommended schedule for pregnant people and children without consulting experts.

The lead plaintiff, a pregnant hospital physician identified as “Jane Doe,” says the May policy shift threatens her ability to get a booster dose. Her physicians had recommended vaccination during pregnancy for added protection. According to the complaint, Kennedy’s unilateral directive contradicts CDC and FDA guidance that notes heightened COVID-19 risks for pregnant individuals.

Medical groups joining the suit include the American Academy of Pediatrics, Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and others. They argue Kennedy ignored scientific evidence and proper regulatory processes. The CDC continues to recommend the COVID-19 vaccine in consultation with doctors, citing studies showing reduced risks during pregnancy.

The lawsuit also follows Kennedy’s removal of all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and appointment of replacements lacking experience in infectious disease. Doctors warn this shift could destabilize vaccine policy nationwide.
