Texas reported just 76 abortions in 2024 — all due to medical emergencies or to protect the mother’s health — according to new data from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). In 2023, only 62 were reported.
But these numbers don’t reflect the full picture. Reporting to the State and Territorial Exchange of Vital Events is voluntary, and not all states participate. The Guttmacher Institute estimates that closer to 35,000 Texas residents obtained abortions in 2023, nearly all of them out of state.
Approximately 14,230 traveled to New Mexico, 6,620 to Kansas, 4,440 to Colorado, and 3,310 to California. Another 6,300 reportedly sought abortions elsewhere. In Kansas alone, Texas abortions surged by over 1,100% from 2021 to 2022.
Texas’ near-total abortion ban took effect in August 2022 after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Similar bans exist in neighboring Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma, forcing many Texans to travel long distances for reproductive care.
HHSC does not track abortions obtained internationally.
