The Oregon House voted 36–15 on Monday to pass Senate Bill 599, a measure that would prohibit landlords from asking about a tenant’s immigration status or discriminating based on identification documents. The bill also bars landlords from disclosing or threatening to disclose a tenant’s immigration status.

Already passed by the state Senate 21–8, the legislation now heads to Gov. Tina Kotek, who can sign, veto, or allow it to become law without her signature. If enacted, it will take effect 30 days later.

“Oregonians should not live in fear that their birthplace could cost them their home,” said Rep. Ricki Ruiz (D-Gresham), the bill’s chief sponsor. “This bill makes it clear: housing is a human right.”

Oregon, the first U.S. state to adopt a sanctuary law in 1987, has reaffirmed protections for immigrants amid intensified federal enforcement under President Donald Trump.

Similar laws exist in California, Washington, and New York.
