MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — Rep. Ilhan Omar criticized President Trump on Sunday after he made disparaging comments about Somali Americans during a recent Cabinet meeting. Trump said he did not “want them in our country” following reports of fraud within Minnesota’s Somali community and subsequently moved to terminate temporary protected status for Somali nationals in the state.

Omar, who represents the largest Somali American community in the United States, condemned Trump’s remarks in an interview with CBS’s Margaret Brennan. She said the president’s language was “completely disgusting,” adding that he displayed an “unhealthy and creepy obsession” with both her and the wider Somali community.

During the Cabinet meeting, Trump called Omar and “her friends” “garbage” and criticized Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as well. He repeated that Somalis “aren’t people that work” and claimed they “do nothing but complain.” Omar warned that such rhetoric poses potential danger, saying dehumanizing language from a president can influence actions taken by supporters.

Trump also suggested Somalis come from a country that is “no good for a reason,” comments Omar says reinforce stigma at a time when Somali American families are already facing heightened scrutiny.

Minnesota Republican leaders have publicly denounced Trump’s remarks, saying attacks on Somali Americans undermine community trust and public safety.
