Oklahoma City, Oklahoma — Crews began cleaning the Oklahoma State Capitol on Tuesday after graffiti featuring anti-ICE messages and threats against political figures was discovered on the building and nearby property.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the vandalism occurred overnight and was found early Tuesday morning on the south side of the Capitol. Authorities described the messages as containing “violent and vulgar rhetoric.” While officials declined to publicly disclose the exact wording, Lt. Mark Southall said the graffiti included anti-ICE propaganda and threats directed at politicians.
Additional graffiti appeared along a nearby underpass on 23rd Street, which runs beneath the Capitol complex. One message referenced Gov. Kevin Stitt by name, while another encouraged violence against Immigration and Customs Enforcement. A separate phrase, “We are the Sons of Liberty,” was also painted on the underpass, referencing the colonial-era group associated with resistance to British rule before the American Revolution.
Officials used brown paper to quickly cover graffiti on the Capitol building, though some messages on the underpass remained visible Tuesday morning. Southall said investigators have video footage of the vandalism and that the Highway Patrol’s Criminal Investigations Division is processing evidence. Cleanup efforts are expected to take several days and cost several thousand dollars.
The Oklahoma Office of Management and Enterprise Services is overseeing cleanup of the Capitol property. Authorities said the incident will be investigated at the federal level.
