COLUMBUS, Ohio — Starting this fall, every Ohio State University undergraduate will be required to gain fluency in artificial intelligence through a new initiative called the AI Fluency Program. The initiative aims to make students “bilingual” — fluent in both their major and the responsible application of AI.
“AI is transforming the way we live, work, teach and learn,” said OSU President Ted Carter. “Every job, in every industry, is going to be impacted in some way by AI.”
The program will embed AI literacy throughout the curriculum, beginning with the incoming freshman class. Students will take a mandatory AI skills seminar and see AI integrated into assignments across disciplines. Faculty are being trained to use AI responsibly in classrooms while maintaining academic integrity.
Philosophy professor Steven Brown, who already uses AI in coursework, called banning it “shortsighted.” Economics professor Subbu Kumarappan noted AI helps high performers thrive but warned others may fall behind if they don’t engage fully.
OSU is the first in Ohio to require AI fluency in every major.
