Cleveland, Ohio — Authorities in Cleveland are investigating the deaths of two young girls whose bodies were discovered inside suitcases buried in shallow graves earlier this week.
According to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner, DNA testing confirmed the two victims were half-sisters, though their identities have not yet been publicly released. The suitcases were found Monday in a field near Ginn Academy after a dog walker discovered one of them and called 911.
Police said the girls are believed to be between roughly 8½ and 14 years old. Both victims were identified as Black. Investigators have not determined how long the bodies had been buried, though Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd told reporters they had likely been there for “some time.”
Authorities also have not yet released a cause of death as the investigation continues.
Police are asking residents in the area to review security camera footage that might show suspicious activity. Detectives with the department’s homicide unit are leading the investigation and have established a 24-hour tip line for information related to the case.
Officials say anyone with relevant information should contact Cleveland police or Cuyahoga County Crime Stoppers as investigators work to identify the victims and determine how they died.
