NEW YORK CITY, New York — Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked the end of Ramadan by breaking his fast with inmates at Rikers Island, describing the experience as a powerful reminder of dignity and shared humanity within the city’s jail system.
Mamdani joined prisoners for an iftar meal, one of 17 public events he attended during the holy month. He said the visit reflected everyday Muslim life in New York, telling NPR it was not intended as a political statement but rather part of his identity. He also emphasized the importance of “mercy, dignity, and humanity” in a system that has faced longstanding criticism.
Rikers Island has been under federal oversight following years of scrutiny over conditions. Mamdani has continued to advocate for reforms, including efforts to end solitary confinement and reduce reliance on the facility.
The visit comes amid broader national debate over religious expression and immigration, as some Republican lawmakers have faced criticism for comments about Muslims. Meanwhile, tensions tied to recent protests in New York have drawn additional attention to the issue.
Mamdani has framed his outreach efforts as part of normalizing Muslim life in the city while continuing to push for criminal justice reforms.
