New York Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs announced Thursday he will not endorse Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in the city’s mayoral race, highlighting divisions within the party over ideology and Israel.

Jacobs said he and Mamdani agree on addressing income inequality but “fundamentally disagree” on solutions. He also criticized Mamdani’s alignment with the Democratic Socialists of America, saying the group does not reflect Democratic Party principles, and rejected Mamdani’s positions on Israel. Mamdani recently told The New York Times he would order NYPD to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited New York City.

Jacobs’s stance contrasts with Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), who endorsed Mamdani despite policy disagreements, praising his focus on affordability. Top Democrats in Congress, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have met with Mamdani but stopped short of endorsing him.

Mamdani won the Democratic primary in a surprise upset over several contenders, including former Gov. Andrew Cuomo. A recent Emerson/PIX11/The Hill poll showed Mamdani leading with 43 percent support, ahead of Cuomo, Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, and Mayor Eric Adams.
