Sylva, North Carolina. A Sylva man is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after police say he set a woman on fire during a domestic violence dispute early Friday morning. According to the Sylva Police Department, officers responded to a call at 587 Chipper Curve Road on Nov. 21 at 7:18 a.m. after reports of a disturbance inside the home.

When officers arrived, they learned that Patrick Tyson and a woman had been arguing when Tyson allegedly threatened to set her on fire if she did not get him a beer. Police say Tyson then grabbed a bottle of isopropyl alcohol, poured it onto the floor and a couch where the woman was sitting, and ignited the liquid. The flames burned the woman’s shirt off her body, though she was not physically injured.

The fire damaged the home’s carpet, couch, and created significant smoke damage. Police also reported that the stove was shattered after Tyson threw an object during the incident. The Sylva Fire Department arrived quickly and extinguished the flames before they spread further.

Tyson was arrested and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, felony first-degree arson, misdemeanor assault on a female, and misdemeanor injury to personal property. He is being held in the Jackson County Jail on a $750,000 secured bond, with a court appearance scheduled for Dec. 1 in District Court.
