North Carolina state Rep. Cecil Brockman, a Democrat from High Point, appeared remotely from a hospital bed Friday while in custody on charges involving a 15-year-old. Brockman, arrested Wednesday, faces two counts each of statutory sexual offense with a child and taking indecent liberties with a child.

District Court Judge Gordon Miller set Brockman’s bond at $1.05 million and ordered him to avoid contact with the alleged victim. According to court documents, the legislator allegedly used his position to try to locate the teen and attempted to reach them through an app and even by calling 911. Prosecutors say Brockman met the teenager online in May.

Top leaders from both parties, including Democratic Gov. Josh Stein, have called for Brockman’s resignation. He has represented his district since 2015.

Brockman’s next court appearance is scheduled for November 13. Conviction on the main charges carries a minimum sentence of 12 years in prison.
