Raleigh, North Carolina — North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson has joined a multistate lawsuit challenging new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, arguing the policy could significantly raise costs for households and businesses.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. Court of International Trade and led by Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield, seeks to block a 10% surcharge on imports from all countries that took effect Feb. 24. The coalition of 24 states argues the tariffs violate constitutional limits on presidential authority.

Jackson said the tariffs could cost North Carolina households between $800 and $1,300 this year. He also cited estimates that residents already paid nearly $3.5 billion in tariff-related costs last year through higher prices on goods such as vehicles, machinery, furniture and pharmaceuticals.

The lawsuit argues Congress—not the president—has the constitutional authority to impose taxes and tariffs. The John Locke Foundation estimates the tariffs could also lead to job losses in North Carolina’s agriculture sector.
