RALEIGH, NC — North Carolina election officials say roughly 34,000 deceased individuals remain listed on voter rolls following a statewide data review, though there is no evidence any ballots were cast in their names.
The findings came after the State Board of Elections cross-checked more than 7.3 million voter records with federal databases, including the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements system. The effort is part of a broader initiative to improve voter roll accuracy and identify irregularities such as duplicate registrations and mismatched records.
Officials emphasized that the presence of deceased individuals on voter rolls does not indicate voter fraud. Instead, they noted that such cases often occur when individuals move out of state and die elsewhere, preventing timely updates to voter records.
State and county officials will now work to verify each flagged registration before removing confirmed deceased voters, following legal requirements for list maintenance and due process.
The review also identified a small number of noncitizens and administrative discrepancies, though officials said these cases represent a tiny fraction of total registrations.
