Sacramento, California – California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday that the Justice Department is investigating him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and accused President Donald Trump of using federal law enforcement for political retaliation.
Newsom made the claim in a video posted on X, saying federal agents had contacted family friends and former employees while seeking records and documents. He said investigators were “not because they’ve found a crime, but because they’re trying to find one.”
The governor did not identify the specific subject of the investigation into him. NBC News reported that one source said Jennifer Siebel Newsom is under investigation involving “her taxes,” while two sources said the matter is being handled through the U.S. attorney’s office in the Eastern District of California.
The White House referred questions to the DOJ, which declined to comment. Newsom’s office said it has filed a public records request seeking communications related to the investigation.
The accusations come as Newsom, a frequent Trump critic and possible 2028 presidential candidate, has clashed with the president over immigration, wildfire policy, redistricting, and National Guard deployments in California.
