In Tennessee, an assistant dean at Middle Tennessee State University was dismissed following controversial remarks about the murder of Charlie Kirk. The university president, Sidney A. McPhee, announced the termination in a Facebook post, citing the employee’s “inappropriate and callous comments” as damaging to the institution’s reputation. The employee was not named in the university’s statement, but U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn identified her as Laura Sosh-Lightsy on social media.
Sosh-Lightsy’s post read, “Looks like ol’ Charlie spoke his fate into existence. Hate begets hate. ZERO sympathy,” according to Blackburn’s shared content. Blackburn also reposted information from Matthew Hurtt, Director of Professional Services at the Leadership Institute, noting that Sosh-Lightsy had been employed at MTSU for over 21 years and had served as Assistant Dean for Student Care and Conduct for the past 15 months.
President McPhee emphasized that the employee held a position of trust with students and that her comments conflicted with the university’s values. “This employee has been fired effective immediately. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Kirk family,” he stated.
Senator Blackburn called for Sosh-Lightsy’s removal, saying, “This person should be ashamed of her post. She should be removed from her position at @MTSU.”
