A new Gallup poll shows continued dissatisfaction with America’s two-party system, as nearly two-thirds of adults say the Republican and Democratic parties fail to represent the public effectively. Conducted from September 2–16, the survey interviewed 1,000 adults across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., by telephone, with a margin of error of ±4 percentage points.

Overall, 62% of respondents said a third major party is needed, up four points from 2024. Thirty percent said the two existing parties do an adequate job, while 8% expressed no opinion. Independents were the most supportive group for a third party at 74%, followed by Democrats at 58% and Republicans at 43%. Among Republicans, 51% said the two parties adequately represent Americans—the only group with a majority expressing satisfaction.

Support was strongest among younger and middle-aged adults, with 67% of those ages 18–34 and 72% of those 35–54 favoring a new party, compared to 51% of adults 55 and older. The desire for a third party also varied slightly by education and income, ranging from 57% to 67%.

Gallup has tracked this sentiment since 2003, with support for a third major party exceeding 50% in nearly every survey since 2010.
