A Minnesota woman who submitted a fraudulent absentee ballot for her deceased mother during the 2024 presidential election has been sentenced to probation, a fine, and an educational assignment emphasizing the importance of voting integrity.

Danielle Christine Miller, 51, of Nashwauk, pleaded guilty to signing and submitting her late mother’s ballot for Donald Trump, telling investigators she was intoxicated at the time. Prosecutors said Miller also signed her mother’s name as a witness on her own ballot. Local election officials flagged the irregular ballots and notified authorities last October.

Minnesota Ninth Judicial District Judge Heidi Chandler sentenced Miller to up to three years of supervised probation, an $885 fine, and required her to read Thank You for Voting: The Maddening, Enlightening, Inspiring Truth About Voting in America by Erin Geiger Smith. She must also write a 10-page paper on the role of voting in democracy and how election fraud undermines public trust.

Itasca County Attorney Jake Fauchald said the case demonstrates the election system’s safeguards and called the sentence “unique but fair,” adding it was designed to educate rather than solely punish.
