MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — Minneapolis police said at least 30 people were detained Friday night as protests intensified following the fatal shooting of an unarmed woman by a federal immigration officer earlier this week.
According to the Minneapolis Police Department, large crowds gathered outside a Canopy Hotel downtown, where some demonstrators forced their way into the building through an alley entrance. Police said individuals in the crowd threw snow, ice, and rocks at officers, police vehicles, and other cars in the roadway, prompting detentions after earlier calls from city officials urging peaceful demonstrations.
The protests stem from the Wednesday killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Macklin Good, who was shot inside her vehicle by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer during an attempted stop. Video footage of the encounter, which circulated widely online, shows officers surrounding Good’s car as she attempted to drive away before shots were fired. Public outrage has grown rapidly since the footage emerged.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has said the officer acted in self-defense, while Vice President JD Vance stated the officer would be granted “absolute immunity.” The investigation is currently being handled solely by the FBI, after Minnesota state investigators were removed from the case.
Minnesota Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith have called for state investigators to be reinstated, arguing that transparency and public trust are at risk. Additional protests against federal immigration enforcement were planned nationwide as the Trump administration continues its expanded enforcement efforts.
