A federal judge sentenced Millbourne, Pennsylvania councilman Md Munsur Ali to 21 months in prison for participating in a failed scheme to rig the 2021 mayoral election. Ali, 48, also received one year of supervised release and a $2,500 fine. He pleaded guilty to 25 charges, including conspiracy and multiple counts of fraudulent voter registration.
According to the Department of Justice, Ali and co-conspirators Md Nurul Hasan and Md Rafikul Islam used Pennsylvania’s online system to fraudulently register nearly three dozen non-residents to vote in Millbourne, a small borough near Philadelphia. The trio used fake addresses and retrieved mail-in ballots, casting write-in votes for Hasan, who had lost the Democratic primary.
Hasan was sentenced to three years in prison; Islam received one year. Hasan also faces additional state charges in Delaware County.
“This case shows we will prosecute election fraud,” said U.S. Attorney David Metcalf. DA Jack Stollsteimer added that the fraud exploited vulnerabilities in the state’s voter registration system, urging legislators to act.
Millbourne Mayor Mahabubul A. Tayub flagged the scheme after noticing suspicious voter registrations.
