Lansing, Michigan. The Michigan Gun Violence Task Force released its final report Monday, outlining dozens of recommendations aimed at reducing firearm-related deaths and improving implementation of the state’s existing gun laws. The task force was established in 2024 through an executive order by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, following mass shootings and a statewide push for stronger gun safety measures.

Chaired by Chief Medical Executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, the group used a public health model to review Michigan’s firearm regulations. The report builds on laws enacted after the 2023 Michigan State University shooting, including universal background checks, safe-storage requirements, and extreme risk protection orders.

Among its major recommendations, the task force urges lawmakers to raise the minimum age for firearm purchases to 21, impose waiting periods, ban large-capacity magazines, and prohibit the sale and possession of assault weapons. Members also recommend ensuring gun manufacturers can face legal accountability when appropriate.

The report includes proposals targeted at specific types of gun violence, including suicide prevention, domestic violence, community-based interventions, and school safety. Suggestions include standardizing training for school safety officers, expanding the state’s school safety tip line, and increasing access to mental health resources for students.

The task force also calls for stronger enforcement of red flag laws, improved procedures for firearm relinquishment, and expanded education on secure gun storage.

According to the task force, experts from public health, law enforcement, education, and gun-owner communities contributed to the recommendations, with a shared goal of reducing harm and improving safety statewide.
