MIAMI, FLORIDA — Miami Mayor-elect Eileen Higgins sharply criticized the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement strategy during a televised interview Wednesday, arguing that current policies are harming families, local economies, and the nation’s moral standing.
Speaking with NewsNation host Chris Cuomo, Higgins urged federal officials to halt aggressive enforcement actions carried out by the Department of Homeland Security in cities across the country. Since President Donald Trump returned to office, DHS has expanded operations in major metropolitan areas, including Los Angeles, Chicago, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Higgins said the approach has created fear in immigrant communities while undermining industries that rely heavily on immigrant labor.
Higgins focused particular criticism on a new immigrant detention facility in the Florida Everglades, informally dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” by state officials. The facility, developed through cooperation between the Trump administration and Florida leaders, has processed thousands of detainees since opening earlier this year. Local reporting indicates that while some detainees have serious criminal convictions, a significant share are held on pending charges or civil immigration violations.
Human rights advocates have raised alarms about conditions at the site, while Higgins framed the facility as emblematic of what she called misplaced national priorities. She contrasted immigration enforcement spending with Miami’s escalating cost-of-living crisis, pledging to prioritize affordable housing as mayor. Higgins, who won the mayoral race by a wide margin, said Miami should focus on building housing rather than expanding detention infrastructure.
