GREENBELT, Maryland — The state of Maryland and Prince George’s County filed a federal lawsuit Thursday against the Trump administration, claiming it acted illegally to halt the relocation of the FBI headquarters from downtown Washington, D.C., to Greenbelt. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for Maryland, accuses federal agencies of “unlawfully diverting” more than $1 billion in congressional funding designated for the Greenbelt project toward renovating the Ronald Reagan Building in D.C.
Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown said the administration’s reversal “sabotages a multiyear collaborative effort” to bring the FBI to Prince George’s County. Gov. Wes Moore and several top state Democrats joined Brown in announcing the lawsuit, vowing to “fight this thing with everything that we have.”
The General Services Administration (GSA) had selected the Greenbelt site in 2023 after more than a decade of study, but the Trump administration abruptly shifted course earlier this year. Maryland officials argue the decision is unlawful and politically motivated, while Republicans on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee recently advanced a resolution to support the D.C. site.
The lawsuit names the GSA, FBI, Justice Department, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Attorney General Pam Bondi as defendants.
