New York, NY — Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a sweeping review of New York Police Department use-of-force policies Monday, along with new accountability measures aimed at officers accused of serious misconduct.
The review, described as the department’s first comprehensive examination of its use-of-force rules in roughly a decade, will include community input and reconsider how officers are trained and guided in encounters involving force.
The changes follow renewed criticism surrounding the 2024 police killing of Win Rozario, a Queens teenager experiencing a mental health crisis. One officer involved was allowed to retire before facing a disciplinary trial after the NYPD failed to notify the Civilian Complaint Review Board of his retirement request.
Mamdani said the city will provide an additional $2.6 million to the NYPD Office of Inspector General, nearly tripling its current staffing capacity. The administration also plans to strengthen procedures preventing officers facing serious discipline from retiring and later seeking other law-enforcement jobs without their records following them.
Additional reforms include improving the release of information to families after fatal or serious police encounters and ensuring required reports of police-involved deaths are submitted to the state.
The announcement comes as Mamdani continues facing pressure from supporters who argue he has retreated from several police-reform promises made during his mayoral campaign.
