New York City, New York — New York Attorney General Letitia James accused the Trump administration of using a recent FBI raid at a Georgia elections office to spread fear and undermine confidence in U.S. democratic institutions, escalating an already long-running political and legal feud with President Donald Trump.

Speaking during a television interview aired Saturday, James said the FBI’s search for 2020 election records at the Fulton County elections office in Georgia was designed to intimidate election officials and voters ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Local officials have questioned the necessity of the raid, while some lawmakers have raised concerns about the presence of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard during the operation.

James linked the raid to a broader Justice Department push to obtain sensitive election-related data from states, including full voter rolls containing personal information such as driver’s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers. The Justice Department has sued more than a dozen states, including New York, for refusing to comply with those demands.

The dispute intensified last week after Attorney General Pam Bondi requested access to Minnesota’s voter rolls as a condition for scaling back federal immigration enforcement operations in the state. James and 22 other state attorneys general condemned that request in a joint letter, calling it an unlawful attempt to intimidate states through federal pressure.

James and Trump have clashed repeatedly over the years, including high-profile civil and criminal cases involving Trump and, more recently, investigations into James herself. She said the latest federal actions represent an effort to sow mistrust in elections rather than legitimate law enforcement activity.
