NEW YORK CITY, New York — A group of Jewish professors at Columbia University has filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), alleging they faced antisemitism and discrimination because of their support for Palestinian rights and criticism of Israel during protests related to the Israel-Hamas war.

The professors contend that Columbia University adopted a strongly pro-Israel position and took adverse actions against faculty members whose views differed from the administration’s stance. According to the complaint, some Jewish faculty members who supported pro-Palestinian demonstrations or criticized Israeli policies were subjected to disciplinary investigations, harassment, professional consequences, and threats.

Faculty members involved in the filing said they were labeled with derogatory terms such as “self-hating Jews” and “kapos,” a term historically associated with Jewish prisoners who assisted Nazi camp authorities during the Holocaust. Several professors also alleged they faced hostility because they opposed Zionism or held views critical of Israel.

Classics professor Joseph Howley stated that Jewish faculty who attempted to mediate between student protesters and university officials were attacked because of their beliefs and were treated as illegitimate members of the Jewish community.

The complaint comes less than a year after Columbia agreed to pay $221 million to resolve federal investigations into allegations that the university failed to adequately address antisemitism on campus. The Trump administration had accused Columbia of not sufficiently protecting Jewish students during protests and demonstrations related to the Gaza conflict.

Columbia University has not publicly responded to the latest allegations. The EEOC filing adds another layer to the ongoing debate over free speech, antisemitism, and political activism at American universities.
