DES MOINES, IA — An Iowa pharmacy technician trainee is facing state charges over allegations she diverted prescription drugs for personal use or distribution, according to regulators.

The Iowa Board of Pharmacy has charged Akasha Brown, formerly of Dubuque County, with multiple violations, including obtaining prescription drugs without lawful authority and engaging in conduct deemed harmful to the public. Officials also allege she made misleading or deceptive representations in the course of her work.

Authorities have not publicly detailed the specific incidents behind the charges, stating only that the alleged actions occurred while Brown was employed at a pharmacy in Dubuque. The case was formally approved by regulators in September 2025 but was not publicly announced until April 2026.

The Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals and Licensing referred questions about the delay in disclosure to the state attorney general’s office, which in turn directed inquiries back to the agency, leaving the timeline unclear.

A hearing before the Board of Pharmacy is scheduled for April 20, where the allegations will be reviewed.

The case highlights ongoing concerns over drug diversion within healthcare settings, an issue regulators continue to monitor across the state.
