With lethal injection drugs proving costly and difficult to obtain, Indiana lawmakers are reviving debate over capital punishment methods. Republican Rep. Jim Lucas and others are preparing legislation to allow executions by firing squad, citing the $300,000 price tag per dose of pentobarbital and $1.175 million spent on doses in the past year, much of which expired unused.

Gov. Mike Braun stopped short of endorsing firing squads but said Indiana should consider alternatives. Republican Rep. Andrew Ireland is also working on legislation to authorize the method, calling it “fast, effective, and constitutional.” Firing squads are already legal in Idaho, Utah, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and South Carolina.

The move comes amid renewed scrutiny of Indiana’s recent executions. Witnesses to Joseph Corcoran’s and Benjamin Ritchie’s deaths reported unexplained movements, and family members allege they were not informed about drug expiration issues. Legislators say any discussion must consider victims, costs, and humane protocols—but admit the debate is only just beginning.

What other options are they considered? Perhaps hanging can make a comeback or even better they might want to try beheading. I’m sure they could put together a committee of googles to think of cost-effective ways to kill people.
