CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is demanding that President Donald Trump refund an estimated $1,700 to every Illinois family after the Supreme Court struck down key tariffs imposed under emergency authority.

In a 6–3 ruling, the Court invalidated tariffs enacted through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, finding the statute did not authorize broad import taxes. Following the decision, Pritzker sent a letter to Trump asserting that Illinois residents are owed $8.67 billion in what he called “total damages” from higher consumer costs and economic disruption.

“Your tariff taxes wreaked havoc on farmers, enraged our allies and sent grocery prices through the roof,” Pritzker wrote, calling the policy unconstitutional and demanding repayment. He said the letter and attached invoice serve as formal notice that compensation is owed and warned of potential legal action if the administration does not comply.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Trump said Friday that any effort to claw back tariff revenue would likely be tied up in litigation for years.

The dispute adds to an ongoing political rivalry between Trump and Pritzker, who is widely viewed as a potential 2028 presidential contender.
