Washington, DC — Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) said Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulled over her son in Minnesota and demanded proof of citizenship, an incident she described as racial profiling amid the Trump administration’s expanded immigration enforcement efforts.
In an interview Sunday with CBS Minnesota affiliate WCCO, Omar said her son was stopped by ICE agents after leaving a Target store and was asked to provide identification. She said he was released only after showing his U.S. passport. Omar, who came to the United States as a refugee before becoming a citizen, said the incident reflects broader concerns within Minnesota’s Somali community.
Omar also alleged that ICE agents previously entered a mosque where her son was praying, though no action was taken at that time. She said she has warned her son to be cautious, arguing that enforcement efforts are focused on areas where Somali Americans live and worship. “They are racially profiling,” Omar said, claiming agents are targeting young men who “look Somali” under the assumption they are undocumented.
The comments came as Omar announced two congressional inquiries into ICE operations in Minnesota following President Donald Trump’s remarks about Somali immigrants and his support for tougher enforcement. Trump has repeatedly criticized Omar and Somali communities, language that civil rights advocates say contributes to fear and mistrust.
The White House pushed back against Omar’s claims. Spokesperson Abigail Jackson said ICE officers are acting professionally and accused Democratic officials of spreading misinformation that puts agents at risk. ICE and the Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
