Meridian, Idaho — A 43-year-old Boise woman has been arrested after authorities say she stole an ambulance and drove it into a building leased by the Department of Homeland Security, triggering a multi-agency investigation involving federal authorities.

Sarah Elizabeth George was taken into custody Monday after Meridian police, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives executed a search and arrest warrant at her residence. The incident began late Feb. 18 when officers responded to a report of a stolen ambulance from St. Luke’s Meridian Medical Center around 11:10 p.m.

According to police, the ambulance was driven into a hospital-owned office building leased to DHS shortly after midnight. Authorities allege the suspect then attempted to ignite the vehicle using gasoline or another accelerant before fleeing the scene.

Meridian Police Chief Tracy Basterrechea said investigators conducted door-to-door canvassing and reviewed surveillance footage to identify George. “It was good, old-fashioned police work,” he said at a press conference.

George is charged with attempted destruction of federal property by fire and malicious destruction of property affecting interstate commerce. Each charge carries a potential sentence of five to 20 years in prison. Officials said additional charges could follow as the investigation continues.
