Dilley, Texas — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement halted all movement Sunday at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center after medical staff confirmed at least two detainees tested positive for measles, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The facility, also known as the South Texas Family Residential Center, began quarantining suspected contacts as federal health teams monitored detainees for additional infections.

DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said the infections were confirmed by Texas health officials and reported to federal authorities Saturday. The two detainees were isolated, and anyone believed to have had contact was placed under quarantine. ICE Health Services Corps suspended transfers and movement inside the facility while providing medical care and conducting monitoring to prevent further spread.

The outbreak drew heightened attention because the Dilley center previously held 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, who were released Saturday following a court order. It remains unclear whether the child or his father had contact with infected detainees. Advocates and attorneys raised concerns about conditions inside the facility, citing reports of sanitation problems and risks inherent in congregate detention settings.

Public health experts note measles spreads easily through the air and can remain infectious on surfaces, posing particular danger to children and immunocompromised individuals. The cases at Dilley come as the United States faces a renewed surge in measles, with hundreds of confirmed infections reported nationally this year. Health officials attribute the resurgence to declining vaccination rates and increased exposure risks in crowded environments.

DHS said inspections and medical oversight are ongoing as authorities work to contain the outbreak.
