El Paso, Texas — The Trump administration is reportedly planning to close a controversial immigration detention facility at Fort Bliss after several deaths and a disease outbreak raised concerns about conditions.

The facility, known as Camp East Montana, opened less than eight months ago as part of expanded immigration enforcement operations. An internal Immigration and Customs Enforcement memo indicates the government plans to terminate a $1.2 billion contract with Acquisition Logistics LLC, the private company operating the camp.

Officials said the Department of Homeland Security is reviewing the facility to ensure it meets detention standards, though no final decision has been announced. The camp has faced criticism from advocacy groups and media reports describing poor conditions and alleged mistreatment of detainees.

Three detainees have died at the facility since it opened. In one case, the El Paso medical examiner investigated the death of a Cuban migrant as a homicide after determining he died from neck and chest compression. Other deaths involved health complications and a suspected suicide.

A measles outbreak has also forced at least 14 detainees into quarantine. The facility currently houses about 1,500 people, far below its capacity of 5,000.
