An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer caught on video violently throwing a woman to the ground in front of her children has been reinstated, less than a week after being removed from duty. The incident occurred September 25 at Manhattan’s federal courthouse, where Monica Moreta-Galarza pleaded with agents after her husband was detained during an asylum-related hearing.
Video shows the officer mocking her with “adiós” before grabbing and slamming her to the floor. She was hospitalized with head injuries. Moreta-Galarza told CBS News she begged for compassion but was met with aggression. Prior to the assault, she said the agent pulled her hair and shouted at her and her children.
The Department of Homeland Security initially condemned the conduct, calling it “unacceptable,” and said the officer had been relieved pending investigation. However, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander confirmed this week the agent is “back to business as usual.”
BBC News reported the officer appears to be the same individual who arrested a court observer in August. Lander and Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) have referred the case to the Department of Justice for prosecution, while local officials continue protesting ICE practices at the courthouse.
